Lions fail with Austin bid
Swindon manager Danny Wilson has revealed that the club have turned down a bid for striker Charlie Austin from Millwall.
Wilson claims the Championship side made an approach for Austin, but that it was rejected because it was not a high enough offer.
“The partnership between Charlie Austin and Vincent Pericard was very good and it was a typical Charlie Austin goal showing all his striker’s instincts,” Wilson said after Austin scored in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy win at Southampton.
“Millwall did make a formal offer for Charlie but it was nowhere near our valuation so he’s staying at the club.”

LuaLua secures Seagulls switch
Newcastle United’s highly-rated winger Kazenga LuaLua has completed his loan switch to Brighton & Hove Albion until December 31.
The 19-year-old, who shone during a brief stint on the south coast last term, has agreed a deal until the New Year.
“He made a very big impact during his time here last year and I am hoping he can do the same and add a few goals to his game this time around,” said Seagulls boss Gus Poyet.
However, LuaLua will not be able to feature against Leyton Orient in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy on Wednesday night as the paperwork was not completed in time.

Jelavic gets green light to join Gers
New Rangers striker Nikica Jelavic has been granted a work permit today by the Scottish Football Association, the club have confirmed.
Subject to paperwork being completed, the Croatia international could make his debut against St Johnstone in the Scottish Premier League at Ibrox on Saturday.
Jelavic agreed to move from Rapid Vienna to the SPL champions last Friday in a £4million deal.

Quality told for Saints – McInnes
St Johnstone boss Derek McInnes claimed his side’s extra quality saw them through a tricky Co-op Cup second-round tie against Morton.
Scott Dobie, making his first start for Saints, gave the home side the interval lead with a header after 22 minutes and 10 minutes from the end Murray Davidson sealed the Scottish Premier League side’s passage through to the next round.
McInnes was pleased with the way his players prevented any real possibility of a cup upset.
“I’m happy to be through into the next round,” the former Morton midfielder said.
“We knew how difficult it was going to be against Morton, who are a good First Division side.
“Morton put us under pressure at times but our players showed a good attitude throughout.
“We defended well when we had to, controlled the game and the quality we had came through and got us the goals.
“So it’s good to get through because we want to go as far as we can in this competition.
“We’ve been in a few semi finals of cup competitions in recent years and we want to do that again and more.”
Morton boss Allan Moore watched his side put up a sterling effort only to fall short.
“I am delighted with the performance but disappointed to go out of the cup,” the former St Johnstone winger said.
“St Johnstone scored against the run of play and then the game opened up and when they got the second goal, it killed it.
“But we put on a good show and played some good football.
“We lacked a cutting edge and our final ball in to the box was poor although the St Johnstone keeper had a couple of good saves to make.”

McInnes: Saints there to be shot at
Derek McInnes insists St Johnstone’s experience of being cup underdogs will stand them in good stead for their Co-op Cup tie against Morton.
Saints are still recovering from the disappointment of the late defeat by Aberdeen in the Scottish Premier League on Saturday and now face a potentially tricky second-round tie at home to the Irn-Bru First Division side on Tuesday night.
However, the St Johnstone boss says that his players, many of whom came up to the top flight with the Perth club at the start of last season, will recognise the desire of the Morton players to take an SPL scalp.
“We have been in cup semi-finals three times in the last four or five years so we want to go one step further and get to a final,” McInnes said.
“To do that we will have to first beat a good Morton team who I’m sure will improve under Allan Moore this season.
“We are at home but Morton will see it as an opportunity to cause an upset and we know that as an SPL side we are there to be shot at now.
“But the reason we have done well in the cups in recent seasons is that we have always been able to raise our game, whether as a First Division side or as an SPL side.
“We believe that on our day we can beat anyone in any game.
“So we know how they will approach the game and we will be aware of that.”
McInnes will have to reshuffle his side for the visit of his former club.
Keeper Peter Enckelman (thigh) and midfielders Liam Craig (hamstring) and Jody Morris (hamstring) are definitely out while defender Dave Mackay remains very doubtful with a back injury.
“Kevin Moon and Martin Hardie are long-term injured and now Craig and Morris are out,” McInnes said.
“We had a lack of fit defenders last week and now we are short in midfield.
“So that puts a strain on us but we just need to get on with it.
“There is no point in feeling sorry for ourselves and it means other people coming in and getting an opportunity.”
“To lose a goal so late in a game, as we did against Aberdeen on Saturday, is always a huge disappointment,” McInnes continued.
“I don’t think we did enough to win but I didn’t think we would lose the game.
“We won’t beat ourselves up too much though, there wasn’t much between the two teams.”
