Posh beaten, Magpies soar

Peterborough suffered a surprise loss, Carlisle edged into second place while Notts County were emphatic winners in League One on Saturday.

Tranmere Rovers earned their first victory of the season as Arnaud Mendy fired home before the interval in a 1-0 win against high-flying Peterborough United.

Greg Abbott’s Carlisle climbed to within a point of leaders Sheffield Wednesday, who play Brentford on Sunday, courtesy of a goalless draw earned against Swindon Town, who are yet to win this term.

Notts County were rampant against out-of-form Yeovil Town as a Ben Davies brace helped the home side to a convincing 4-0 victory at Meadow Lane.

Huddersfield Town looked set for a comeback scalp of Bournemouth only for Marc Pugh to score a leveller for the plucky Cherries with eight minutes remaining. Josh McQuoid fired the visitors ahead before Antony kay headed home the equaliser on half-time. Gary Roberts put Town ahead from the spot on 48 minutes, but Pugh earned the visitors a 2-2 draw.

Andy Bond was the matchwinner for in-form Colchester United as he scored with seven minutes left on the clock to slay Walsall 1-0.

Milton Keynes Dons made it back-to-back league victories as Lewis Guy came off the substitutes’ bench to score the winner versus Hartlepool United in a game that saw Dean Lewington sent off in the latter stages.

Dagenham & Redbridge claimed their first League One win of the new season with a 2-0 victory against Leyton Orient thanks to two goals from Roman Vincelot.

Exeter City also secured their maiden league three-point haul of the campaign in late fashion as Ryan Harley slotted in a 90th-minute penalty in a 1-0 succes over Charlton.

Southampton are still seemingly reeling from manager Alan Pardew’s shock exit from the club after the Saints fell to a 2-0 home loss against Rochdale.

Chris O’Grady and a thunderbolt from Gary Jones haanded the visitors the points.

Oldham Athletic were held to a 1-1 draw against Bristol Rovers after Chris Taylor’s goal cancelled out Will Hoskins’ opener.

Foster and Velicka trade places

Rangers and Aberdeen have swapped two players ahead of the transfer deadline, with Richard Foster moving to Ibrox in place of Andrius Velicka.

Versatile defender Foster joins Rangers on a season-long loan with striker Velicka moving in the opposite direction for the same period.

The pacy Foster will help provide cover for Walter Smith’s squad, which is smaller than recent years, as he can play at full-back and across the midfield.

Foster admitted he was going to Ibrox as a squad player but the 25-year-old is excited by the prospect of playing in the Champions League, where Rangers will face Manchester United, Valencia and Bursaspor.

Foster, who has made 250 appearances for Aberdeen, told Rangers’ official website: “It has all happened very quickly. I was surprised the way things have gone and I’m very excited by it.

“The Champions League is the biggest stage of all and to have a chance of playing there is terrific.

“You look at the teams in the group and it’s going to be brilliant.

“I have never been to a Champions League match at Ibrox but having watched on TV you can see that the atmosphere is incredible so it’s something that I would love to be involved in.

“This is a really good opportunity for me. I am under no illusions that I am going to walk into the team but I will work really hard to try to get there and if I do it will be a great personal achievement.

“I know a lot of the players already having played against them a few times and also with them with Scotland Under-21s. I know Steven Naismith, Steven Whittaker and Kirk Broadfoot from that time.

“So I have to hit the ground running and show what I can do in training and try to get into the manager’s plans as early as I can.

“If you look at the Rangers team, it’s going to be difficult for me to break in. Hopefully my pace can be an asset in either of the full back positions or further forward.

“I realise that I am a squad player but I hope to do what I can to show that I can play for Rangers.”

Velicka’s loan deal will take him to the end of a largely unproductive three-year contract with Rangers.

The Lithuania international, who is in Kaunas ahead of his national team’s Euro 2012 qualifier against Scotland, signed from Viking Stavanger for £1million in June 2008.

The striker had netted 25 goals in an 18-month spell with Hearts but found first-team chances limited at Ibrox, scoring five times in nine games.

Velicka was loaned to Bristol city a year ago but his season lasted 11 minutes as he ruptured his cruciate ligament.

The 31-year-old returned in pre-season for Rangers but his chances of competitive action were reduced with the acquisition of James Beattie and Nikica Jelavic.

He will also face tough competition for a place at Pittodrie after Josh Magennis and Scott Vernon joined Chris Maguire and Darren Mackie in Mark McGhee’s striking options this summer, with Mitch Megginson and Michael Paton also looking for a place up front.

Luke planning to Steele up

Barnsley goalkeeper Luke Steele has backed himself to cut out the errors as his side bid to climb the Championship table.

The former Manchester United shot-stopper spilled a cross against QPR on the opening day which led to a goal then let in another soft goal in the 1-0 Carling Cup defeat to Rochdale.

The gloveman was also at fault when he leaked another goal in the Tykes 3-3 draw with Bristol City last Saturday.

“I can’t afford to make too many more mistakes because otherwise I’ll be out of the team,” Steele admitted to The Star.

“Hopefully I can make up for those mistakes during the rest of the season.

“You’d like to think that over the course of the season you’re luck evens out, I’m sure it will this season. All keepers make mistakes, but it’s how you try and respond afterwards which counts.”

Forster aiming to be number one

Fraser Forster has warned Lukasz Zaluska he does not like sitting on the bench after the Newcastle ‘keeper joined Celtic on a season-long loan.

The 22-year-old became Neil Lennon’s 10th summer signing after a recommendation from the Celtic manager’s former midfield partner, Paul Lambert.

Forster played 39 times for Lambert last season to help Norwich win the League One title, and the 6ft 7in keeper is determined to enjoy a similarly successful spell in Scotland.

Forster’s route to the Newcastle number one jersey was blocked by Steve Harper, who has established himself following years in the shadow of Shay Given before the Irishman’s move to Manchester City.

Zaluska has not looked entirely convincing in the Celtic goal since Artur Boruc departed for Fiorentina and Lennon was keen to add someone who could push the Pole all the way.

Forster intends to do just that and he believes his title-winning experience at Norwich will prepare him for the demands of playing in goal for Celtic.

“For me it was always about getting out and playing,” Forster said.

“Harps had a fantastic year last season and kept a lot of clean sheets.

“Quite rightly he has started the season as number one at Newcastle.

“He has waited a long time for his chance and he has taken it, and no doubt he will hold on to that shirt.

“But I’ve said all along, even when I was at Norwich, that I wanted to be playing football. I don’t like sitting on the bench.

“I’m here to provide competition and I aim to be number one. I’m going to work as hard as I can and hopefully prove to the gaffer I should be playing.

“I’ve got to prove week in, week out, if I’m playing, that I’m worthy of the shirt.”

Forster had short loan spells with Bristol Rovers and Stockport but he really came of age at Carrow Road last term.

“It was a very different experience last year where the pressure is on and everyone wants to beat you,” he said.

“Obviously here is a much bigger scale but it’s all about winning games and it’s fantastic to get the chance to come to a big club where you are expected to win every week.

“Paul Lambert told me what a big club it was and I relish the chance to come and perform.

“He didn’t have to sell it to me. He was a fantastic player here and did a lot for me last year, and I can’t thank him enough for that.

“He told me I should get myself up here and sign the papers as quickly as possible.”

Forster trained with the Celtic squad for the first time this morning after first being made aware of the club’s interest last week.

Forster, who has never made a first-team appearance for Newcastle, is ineligible for Thursday’s clash against FC Utrecht in Holland and may not be ready for the Clydesdale Bank Premier League clash at Motherwell on Sunday.

“Obviously I can’t play in the Europa League on Thursday and I have missed a few games with a slight hip injury but I’m okay now,” he said.

“I’m just getting fit, I missed a few weeks and had a few days’ training. I’ve been working hard in the gym and it shouldn’t take too long.”

Howe hails departing Pitman

Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe has paid tribute to Brett Pitman as he closes in on a switch to Bristol City.

The striker is expected to finalise his move on Monday after snubbing Premier League side Blackpool, bringing an end to his six-year association with the Cherries.

Howe expressed gratitude toward the 22-year-old for his service to the club, which saw him plunder 59 goals in 103 appearances.

Howe told the club’s official website: “We expect Brett to join Bristol City and we are very disappointed to lose him.

“Anyone who has watched us for the last 18 months can see what a good player and excellent finisher he is and we are going to miss him immensely.

“It’s a great opportunity for him to test himself at a higher level and we wish him all the best and I hope he goes there and carries on the form that he has shown for us. I’d like to thank him for everything that he has done for AFC Bournemouth.”
