Abidal planning on Barcelona stay

Barcelona defender Eric Abidal admits he would be happy to end his career at Camp Nou.

Abidal has two years to run on his current contract and the Frenchman is keen on winning an extension.

The 31-year-old admits if he failed to win fresh terms he would hang up his boots rather than play anywhere else.

“If the club were to propose a renewal of my Barca contract, I’d gladly accept the proposal,” Abidal told El Mundo Deportivo.

“Otherwise I’ll stop playing football and I will enjoy my victories and my family. I want to end my career here.”

Abidal, who plays at left-back for Barca, admits his best position is as a central defender even though Barca coach Pep Guardiola has confidence in him at full-back.

“Guardiola has spoken with me and they have confidence in me at left-back, but I am a better central defender,” added Abidal.

Meanwhile, Barcelona captain Carles Puyol could return to action in next week’s Champions League clash against Panathinaikos after injury.

Puyol, who was forced to miss Spain’s recent games against Liechtenstein and Argentina because of the leg injury, will miss this weekend’s Primera Liga clash with Hercules.

But he is making good progress with the problem and he could be available for the opening encounter with Panathinaikos.

“Each day I am better and my sensations are positive,” Puyol told his Twitter followers.

Balotelli flattered by Milan interest

Mario Balotelli is flattered to hear of AC Milan’s interest, but his agent insists he is focused on becoming a success with Manchester City.

The forward only joined the Eastlands revolution last month after leaving the Rossoneri’s bitter rivals Inter Milan in a reported £24million deal.

But that has not stopped Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani from expressing his desire to sign the 20-year-old at some point in the future.

And Balotelli, who was ruled out of action for six weeks with a knee injury on Wednesday, admits Galliani’s comments sit well with him.

He told Sky Italia: “I’m pleased for the words of Galliani. I like AC Milan, they are a strong team.”

Balotelli’s agent Mino Raiola, though, maintains his client will not contemplate a move back to Serie A with his career at City so fresh.

He added: “Balotelli to Milan is only a fantasy that does not correspond to reality.

“The owner of Manchester City is an important character and now would be wrong to think of the future.

“Mario must keep a cool head and prove to be a big player in England, then after a few years we’ll see.

“In the market you can never rule out anything, his move to Milan, Real Madrid, Juventus or a return to Inter. But talking today about it is wrong.”

Zlatan excited by Milan move

Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Robinho have played for some of the biggest clubs in the world but none have stirred their emotions as much as AC Milan.

Ibrahimovic, who once played for cross-city rivals Inter Milan and then spent last season with Barcelona, and Robinho, the former Real Madrid winger, were unveiled by the Rossoneri today.

Both are expected to make their debuts on Saturday at newly-promoted Cesena.

“I was close to joining Milan four years ago,” Ibrahimovic said. “Finally, I have arrived.

“I have played in so many teams before in my career but this is the nicest jersey.

“Milan must win everything.”

The 28-year-old says he has a burning desire to succeed like never before.

His one-year sojourn to Barcelona did not go as expected with the club more than willing to take a loss and sell him before this summer’s transfer deadline.

At Inter, he shone for their former coach Jose Mourinho and he expects to be even better with Milan.

“I return to Italy with more hunger and will,” the Sweden striker said.

“Therefore, I hope to conquer the scudetto and the Champions League and I believe Milan can do it.

“I am certain, just as I am certain that we are stronger than Inter and that we will finish first.

“I am motivated as I’ve never been before in my career.”

Ibrahimovic is as much of a fan as a player.

“The idea of playing next to (Alexandre) Pato and Ronaldinho motivates me a lot,” he said, “but I cannot forget (Filippo) Inzaghi, who is a phenomenon.”

Inzaghi is 37 years old and is the Champions League’s all-time leading scorer alongside former Real Madrid star Raul.

Robinho, who played at Manchester City but ended up returning home to Brazil on loan last year, also has much to prove.

“I am delighted,” the 26-year-old said.

“In the summer, I had some contact with other teams but no concrete offer.

“I always wanted to play at Milan, it’s one of the best European teams and all the Brazilians that have played here have had an amazing history.

“I will try to work hard and win as much as possible.

“I have come here to play and I will do my best to give my contribution.”

Real duo were never on Bayern’s radar

Bayern Munich’s director of sport Christian Nerlinger claims his side were never interested in signing Mesut Ozil or Sami Khedira this summer.

Khedira made the move to Real Madrid from Stuttgart while Ozil, who also moved to the Bernabeu, was signed from Werder Bremen, but Nerlinger says Bayern, who generally make it their priority in signing the most talented German players, were not even interested in the pair.

“We did not get to the stage where we wanted to talk to them or even make an offer because we were not convinced that they would make it to the top level,” said Nerlinger to Kicker magazine.

Bayern were rumoured to have already reached an agreement with Khedira that he would consider them before leaving Stuttgart for anywhere else, but Nerlinger has denied this.

The proof of that is the fact that Khedira did indeed move to Real. According to Nerlinger, had Bayern made such an agreement, then the Germany midfielder would now be playing for them.

“If FC Bayern wants a player, then we are absolutely capable of signing him or keeping hold of him,” he added, claiming he would have had “no fear” of entering a bidding war with Real.

Rather, there was simply no place in the Bavarians’ squad for the pair.

“We are 100% convinced with (Toni) Kroos in the attacking midfield position and (Thomas) Muller has risen like a shooting star in that position,” he explained.

Marseille failed in Drogba bid – Dassier

Marseille tried to lure Chelsea striker Didier Drogba back to the club last month, club president Jean-Claude Dassier has revealed.

Club president Jean-Claude Dassier has revealed coach Didier Deschamps and sporting director Jose Anigo were in disagreement over several potential signings – as well as the controversial exit of Hatem Ben Arfa to Newcastle and Mamadou Niang to Fenerbahce – and have only now patched up their working relationship.

But those tensions did not stop the club launching a bid to sign Drogba, the player they sold to Chelsea for £24million in 2004, and they could try again in the near future.

“We even tried to bring in Drogba, but this has not been possible,” Dassier said. “We’ll see, you should never give up in life. ”

Dassier revealed that Deschamps and Anigo had met for clear-the-air talks after a testing summer.

“This helped dispel some of the misunderstandings,” he said. “They said what they thought of each other, it’s good.

“The tensions are behind us. Today they are working together again after a complicated month.”

Dassier revealed the two men disagreed on the departure of top scorer Mamadou Niang, who left for Fenerbahce after asking to be sold due to the arrivals of Andre-Pierre Gignac and Loic Remy, while the club’s attempt and failure to sign Alou Diarra from Bordeaux also led to disagreements.

Ben Arfa, who went on strike to force through a move to Newcastle, also caused problems.

However, Dassier insisted Deschamps was still the club’s first choice to remain in charge throughout, and they never stopped looking to the future, as evidenced by the attempt to bring Drogba back to the Velodrome.
